Nick started learning the piano when he was about 5. He gave up not long before he gave up the oboe. When he was 12 though, his brother’s friend played him a Metallica tape and he was sold on the guitar. His Dad gave him a guitar and he hasn’t put it down since. Along the way, he’s also picked up harmonica, fretless bass and pretty much anything that makes a sound. He played in a nu-metal band until he was about 16 when his music technology teacher forced them all to listen to Miles Davis for about two weeks solid. Nu-metal lost its appeal. He bought a sampler when a different music tech. teacher explained to him how drum sounds were made, whilst hitting the wall next to him.
It was about this time that he heard Amelia’s terrible recording of Aurélie playing. “It blew me away,” he says. He was heavily into Jeff Buckley at this point and he felt, and still feels, that they possess the same purity.
They made some rudimentary recordings. He put some rudimentary samples and effects on. He wasn’t happy. They did it again with new equipment. He wasn’t happy. He spent about 2 grand on studio equipment when he finished college. They did it again. “I’m happy with it now. “ he says.
